The Big Melt

A special commission as part of the 100 Years of Stainless Steel celebrations, The Big Melt is a feature length elegy to the men and women who toiled in Sheffields steelworks and a hymn to Britains proud industrial past.

Working with Sheffields own musical hero Jarvis Cocker, acclaimed director Martin Wallace has woven an exquisite tapestry of steel industry-related archival footage drawn from the BFI National Archive.

Jarvis also provides the films stirring musical accompaniment, collaborating with a raft of Sheffields finest musicians, including a string quartet, a brass band, members of PULP, Richard Hawley, The Forgemasters and a youth choir.

The film was performed live at Sheffields celebrated Crucible Theatre at Doc/Fest 2013. The audience in attendance at The Crucible theatre were given strips of blue plastic through which to view the film, to replicate the experience of the steelworkers who wore glasses with blue lenses to protect their eyes from the glare of the molten metal.
